For the 2017 season, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC called on photographer Anthony Redpath to create the launch and promotional imagery for the team. With a background in photographing a wide variety of content, Redpath had a challenging task, photographing and freezing professional athletes.
“Aside from all the challenes that come along with an advertising shoot (limited time, client liaison, logistics), we had to light a large set with area for the players to run through at full speed.” With top-notch athletes, the ability to freeze motion can often create problems even with strobe. For what appears as just a flash of light can still create blurry image due to a long flash duration.
For this, Redpath naturally turned to the broncolor Scoro. With industry-leading technology, broncolor has long been known for combining short flash durations even at higher output levels. Thanks to the Scoro’s ability to produce output with speed, the crew simply needed to dial in the Scoro for the shortest flash duration. This is done simply by setting the Scoro to ‘t01 min’ which prioritizes flash duration to freeze motion.
With the technical side, there were still challenges creatively. “I was after lighting that allowed total freedom of movement and would model the subject well, in a dramatic sense while holding tonal detail. The lighting needed to be symmetrical to allow for quick changes in direction while staying consistent.”
Scoro provided the power and technology to answer to both creative and technical challenges for a demanding shoot. Are you using broncolor on your lighting challenges? Tell us about them by contacting us!
